This month's focus is on... The History of Coffee
There are many stories explaining the discovery of coffee. The most recognised story concerns a goat herder who noticed his herd became lively after eating cherries from a scrub. The herder decided to try them himself and also found he was more alert.
The term "mocha" for coffee stems from an Arabian legend. A man and his followers were banished to the desert to die. Whilst in the desert they found an unknown plant and decided to boil it to eat. The man and his followers were saved but there survival was taken as a religious miracle from the nearby village called "Mocha", hence the name Mocha is associated with coffee.
The coffee plant originally grew in Ethiopia. The spread of coffee to other countries was initially illegal and was smuggled by Arabs. By some Christians it was named the "Devil's drink". Luckily Pope Vincent III soon banished this idea because he liked it so much!
Today coffee is one of the few crops which 3rd world countries can produce profitably.
