Can you believe that before filing systems, paperwork was just bundled in to piles? It was organisations such as banks, transport companies and educational sectors that required the use of sensible filing systems, due to increased volumes of paperwork.
This led to the creation of the lateral file in 1898 by Edwin Seibels. From then on, a large variety of different types of filing cabinets were designed such as letter cabinets which have flat file drawers with alpha-numerical dividers and a metal device meant to hold the papers in.
So today we have all kinds of filing cabinets, with varying quality. The most important aspect when searching for a filing cabinet, is it's suspension. There are many cheaper cabinets on offer with flimsy suspension, so when they are packed full, they get jammed. Also, good quality filing cabinets are made from steel, for their durability and protection of your files. Some cabinets now come with counterweighted drawers, so you can't tip the cabinet over when the drawers are pulled out. Fire resistent cabinets are also a good option, for obvious reasons and can stand 1700°F (926°C) for an hour or so.
