Approximately 1.3 million tonnes is collected in England alone in a year for recycling. This leaves a large amount of paper unaccounted for.
For every tonne of paper used for recycling the savings are:
- at least 30000litres of water
- 3000 - 4000 KWh electricity (enough for an average 3 bedroom house for one year)
- 95% of air pollution.
Paper is a bio-degradable material. When it goes to landfill, it produces methane as it rots, which is a potent greenhouse gas. It is now seriously recognised that global warming is a reality, and that methane and carbon dioxide emissions have to be reduced now, to curtail its effects.
So if your office copier room hasn't got a recycle bin, make sure you get one now and start saving the environment!
